This small Brazilian town is located at one hour of rápido of Tabatinga, at the mouth of the river Yavarí (or Javari), opposite Peru. There are shops and a few small restaurants. The inhabitants live mainly from the exploitation of wood and the extraction of rubber. The indigenous population is important. There is a small ethnographic museum located in the center, the Museu Magüta, dedicated to the indigenous cultures of the triple border, and mainly to the Tikunas. The name of the town pays homage to Benjamin Constant Botelho de Magalhães (1836-1891), an emblematic figure of the Brazilian Republic.
