Leticia is located on the banks of the Amazon, 3,700 km from its mouth. Capital of the largest department of Colombia, Amazonas, it is a simple town enclosed between Brazil and Peru, a checkerboard of a few streets with wooden houses separated from the sidewalk by a small flowery garden. The calm of the city is only disturbed at the time of the exit of the classes or the few offices. There are probably as many motorized bicycles as there are inhabitants in Leticia. The 49,000 inhabitants of the municipio work mainly in cross-border trade, fishing and tourism. The indigenous communities living in the vicinity are the Yaguas, Ticunas (or Tikunas) and Cocamas. Beyond the Brazilian border (a symbolic sign and invisible customs officers mark the borderline) is the twin city of Tabatinga, a larger replica of Leticia, with its port and airport. The words exchanged around you, in a mixture of Portuguese and Spanish, will inform you that you have changed country. Leticia is still only a trading post isolated from the modern world. Its visitors only pass through it, on their way to or from an excursion on the Amazon River. It is a pleasant stopover at the crossroads of three countries (Colombia, Brazil and Peru), united by the same environment and a population with multiple origins. In this, the city is unique in Colombia.
