Puerto Nariño is considered the ecological capital of Colombia. This quiet town is located 75 km upstream from Leticia, 2 hours by river shuttle. Planted on a hill, between the Loretoyacu river (a tributary of the Amazon, with calm and black waters) and the forest, there is no car, nor motorcycle, a true happiness! One moves on foot or in dugout. The wooden houses are painted with warm colors and the birds are everywhere. Puerto Nariño is known throughout Colombia for its environmental initiatives. Projects focus on sustainable housing, waste management and community rainwater harvesting. Fishermen help conservationists monitor turtles, pink dolphins, yellow frogs, or manatees, and train hunters from other villages in resource and species preservation. One appreciates the calmness of the place, where indigenous Ticuna, Cocoma and Yagua coexist peacefully with other Colombians, more recently arrived from all over the country.
