Durango is the story of a small town in the Rocky Mountains built with the railway. She was born with the arrival of the Denver & Rio Grande Railroad in 1881. For 130 years, the train linked Durango to the small town of Silverton, 80 kilometers from there to the north, supplying the miners in the San Juan region. The famous line then became a historic site that always transports thousands of travelers every year but now for tourist purposes. The charming city of Durango, for its part, has become a small living center, partly pedestrian, surrounded by cafés, galleries, shops and restaurants installed in ancient saloons and other historic Victorian buildings. The vintage shops and numerous addresses where healthy, local, but always gourmet gastronomy flourishes are all advantages that give the city a soft living and a unique atmosphere both sporting, western, hippy and artistic. Whether Durango is, for you, a drop point to explore the mountains in the vicinity, to visit the pueblos of Mesa Verde National Park, to relive the famous train journey to Silverton or simply to enjoy its pleasant downtown, it is a step to consider in your stay in Colorado.
