A small lonely village lost in the middle of a picturesque valley opening onto the mountains of the Front Range. Between green farmland, foothills of rugged Rocky Rockies with conifers and high snow peaks. The village has something to seduce lovers of nature with its beautiful state park, its natural sources of Orvis Hot Springs or its magnificent scenic road of Elk Ridge Trail. But Ridgway is mainly known because of the film True Grit (the 1969 version with John Wayne) that was shot on the spot. The old town of the railway has been completely revisited for the production needs. Today, many establishments built for shooting are still in the city and have found a second life, including the firefighters' barracks transformed into artists' studios, the stables becoming the post. The wagon of the film is in Heritage Park. The city is very fast, but it can be the subject of a pleasant step, especially on the road to reach Ouray, 15 minutes away.
