Travel Guide Shiprock

A truly iconic site for Native American culture, Shiprock is a small mountain in the middle of nowhere that stands 518 meters high. Located in the Navajo territory that extends into Arizona, the Navajos call it "the rock with wings". Legend has it that it is an ancient bird that was used to transport Navajo ancestors from their lands to here. Today Shiprock is a place that remains revered by the Indians. Shiprock is also located in the area occupied by the ancient Pueblo, or Anasazi people. It is the remnant of the erosion of the gorge of a volcano that formed beneath the surface of the earth.
