This national monument protects the remains of a pre-Columbian pueblo in northwestern New Mexico near the town of Aztec. These are 11th to 13th century monuments by the Anasazi people, mistakenly attributed by 19th century settlers to the Aztec civilization. The Pueblo people describe this site as part of their migratory journey. The site covers 1.28 km2, with 400 rooms and chambers. One can even observe the original framework supporting the roof, as well as the footprints of the former inhabitants in the mortar, and imagine the echo of ritual drums in the large reconstructed kiva.
