Mon district lies in northern Nagaland, on the border with Myanmar and Arunachal Pradesh. This is the land of the Konyak Nagas. Each village has an Angh, an undisputed king whose house is always the largest in the tribe. In front of the house, human skulls are often displayed, as a reminder of the Konyaks' headhunting past. The Aoling (Aoleang Monyu) festival, a showcase for Konyak culture, folklore and traditions, takes place from April1 to 6 each year. Situated at an average altitude of 655 m, Mon Town serves above all as a base for visiting the various villages in the surrounding area. There are no hotels here, apart from a few guesthouses, and no restaurants either, apart from small gargotes serving local cuisine... Power cuts are frequent and the telephone network is very weak... You're at the very edge of India!
