population: 50,780. 360 km northeast of Guwahati and 75 km from Jorhat. Sivasagar (or Sibsagar) was the capital of the Kingdom of Ahom from 1699 to 1788. Ancient Rangpur preserves many monuments from this period. It is also famous for its tea. Situated between Jorhat and the Mon district of Nagaland, the town is well worth a visit, particularly for its Sivasagar Sivadol temple complex and ancient palaces.
