Located at an altitude of 1,325 meters, this small town of about 36,000 inhabitants is built around a central hill. It is the nerve center of the Ao culture, a Protestant Naga tribe that was the first in Nagaland to be evangelized after the arrival of the American missionary Edwin W. Clark in 1872. The history of Mokokchung is marked by the massacre perpetrated by the Indian army on December 27, 1994. After a Naga insurgency killed a soldier, two army battalions attacked the villagers in retaliation, killing 12 people, leaving some missing, raping several women and burning several businesses and homes.
