Population approx. 5,000. The village of Longwa, on the Indo-Burmese border some 40 km from Mon Town, is one of Nagaland's main attractions. Isolated, you have to sign a permit in Mon Town, wind your way through the hills and pass a military post before reaching it. The road offers magnificent green landscapes. Longwa, or Lungwa, is inhabited by the Konyaks, the largest Naga tribe. In the past, the Konyaks were a warlike tribe. Headhunters, they collected human skulls. The various Naga tribes were constantly at war with each other until the Christianization of these peoples pacified their relations. Some of Longwa's former members still have tattoos on their faces. The king of the Konyak tribe, the Angh, resides in Longwa. His jurisdiction extends to Arunachal Pradesh and Myanmar. You can visit his house, which has the distinction of having one side in India and the other in Myanmar. A collection of trophies and local handicrafts (woodcarving, jewelry) are on display. In the past, the Angh had up to 60 wives. The current Angh has just two wives. Longwa celebrates the popular Aoling festival on April 5.
