TEMPLE DE JANUS
The remains of a typical Gallo-Roman sanctuary, a fanum dedicated to a deity unknown in Autun.
Situated 400 m from the ramparts of Autun, on the other side of the Arroux river, this 3rd century B.C. monument is the remains of a Gallic sanctuary, a fanum dedicated to an unknown divinity. Its name, Janus, refers to the Jenetoy district, and the temple comprises a cella (hall of worship), a kind of square tower, some 24 m high and 16 m square, once covered, of which only two sections remain. The surviving niche housed a statue of the deity. Aerial views have revealed that the temple once belonged to a cult complex.
