The atoll's name comes from the pirates and slave traders John and Rodger Glover, who were active in the area in the late 17thcentury . In 1996, the atoll was declared a marine reserve, and listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2000. Located less than 145 km off the coast of Belize, the lagoon boasts some 700 coral plates and numerous islands, including Amounme Point Caye, Northeast Caye, Long Caye, Middle Caye and Southwest Caye. Around this reef, depths range from 8 to 10 m, before quickly reaching 900 m outside! Fishing is strictly controlled and even prohibited on 30% of the total surface area.
