CHÂTEAU-PALAIS
Discover this beautiful complex from the 11th and 12th centuries, which is one of the most significant of the Romanesque civil style in Catalonia
This beautiful 11th and 12th century complex is one of the most significant examples of the Romanesque civil style in Catalonia. Built by the bishops of Girona, masters of the area for 1,000 years, it was an administrative center in which they managed the region's numerous estates. Square in plan, it comprises a first floor, a first floor and a terrace with a chapel within a keep (torre de l'homenatge). Video and explanatory panels accompany the visit, and access to the terrace affords magnificent views of the old quarter, the surrounding plain and the Gavarres massif. Heavily modified in the 16th and 17th centuries to give it a particularly majestic air, the main facade of the palace-castle bears the name and emblem of the bishop Arévalo de Zuaco who had it built, but its most remarkable feature is the large machicolation above the main door.
