The Mergui Islands, also known as the Myeik Islands, in reference to the nearest town, are a real jewel in the Andaman Sea. The junta tried in 1997 to develop tourist activities there, but without success, and it is only with the opening of the regime that the 800 islands that make up this archipelago, which is prized for its seabed and for the expensive cruises that are offered in the surrounding area, are accessible. This incredible seascape is home to the Moken people, a minority also known as "sea gypsies", who are found on the coasts of countries in the region, such as Thailand. As this region is still very little visited, it has many secrets to share. It is a privileged destination, and this may be the price to pay to protect it from the masses. A piece of advice if you want to go through Mergui: go from Dawei to the islands, then to Mergui, before coming back to Dawei.
