BASALT QUARRIES
Discover the basalt quarries, a rock used in industry for its anti-acid properties
Quarrying basalt, that black volcanic stone, is not new to Castellfollit. Although the same family - Ortiz - has been involved in this activity since 1929, the first documents to mention it date back to 1887. This rock is used in industry for its antacid properties, and as a basic component in domestic and decorative applications: fireplaces, flooring and paving. Much of the village's old center is paved with sculpted basalt stone, as is the Rambla in Barcelona, which in the 20th century decided to source its stone from La Garrotxa, as it was cheaper than foreign imports. Today, the quarry is still in operation, but its volume of extraction is now regulated following abuses that endangered the foundations of the cliff on which the village stands.
