Old Lyme is one of those classic Connecticut coastal villages, with a few opulent homes along Main Street. The town's historic center is home to a number of fine homes that once belonged to sailors. Although the town is not of major interest, it was an important artists' colony in the early 20th century, appreciated by American Impressionist painters. This history is recounted in the Florence Griswold Museum. Old Lyme is home to some 8,000 year-round residents, with a thousand more in summer. It is crossed by the Lieutenant River, a small river (6 km) that flows into the Connecticut River.
