A small town of 27,000 inhabitants, New London has always had a close connection with the sea. Used as a naval base during the War of Independence, in the first half of the 19th century it became one of the most important whaling ports in the world. The architecture of the town still bears the traces of this past: along Huntington Street you can admire Whale Oil Row, four sumptuous houses built between 1835 and 1845, three of which in the Greek Revival style belonged to men who had made their fortune in the whaling industry. Today, New London is a pleasant little town where Connecticut College students mingle with artists and artisans
