This small town has 200 inhabitants in winter, but up to 600 in summer, a victim of its tourist success in the summer. A former trapper's camp that was established in 1905 in an area populated by the Ahtnas Indians, Gakona became a village when a motel, the Gakona Lodge and Trading Post, was established. Today, it is considered a historical monument. You can stop at the bridge over the Gulkana River and watch, depending on the season, mainly in summer, salmon swim upstream in search of fresh water. Gakona lives from the wood industry but also from tourism, hunting and rafting.
