Accessible via the Long Island Rail Road, Long Beach is one of New Yorkers' favourite beaches, which can be visited for a day and returned home in the evening. Its fine sand, which extends over three miles, and its promenade, which is assaulted by pedestrians and bicycles in summer, offer a privileged setting only 45 minutes from Manhattan. Hard hit by Hurricane Sandy in 2012, which caused a two-week power and water outage, Long Beach has invested heavily in its reconstruction, and now bears no trace of the hurricane's devastating passage.
