Bahawalpur State was founded in 1690 by Bahadur Khan but its present name was not given until 1748 by the Nawab Bahawal Khan Abbasi I. In 1802, after the fall of the Durrani empire, Bahawalpur became an independent princely state, which was ruled by the Abassi dynasty until 1954. Two of their palaces are still in Bahawalpur city, but they are now under army control and closed to foreigners. The magnificence of their private cemetery, next to Derawar Fort, probably gives a glimpse of the royal family's lifestyle at the time of their reign. The city does not have many points of interest but it is a good entry to Cholistan, and Uch Sharif, about 75 kilometres from Bahawalpur, is really worth a visit.
