The capital of the Alagoas before Maceió, Marechal Deodoro, despite its 46 000 inhabitants, remains a picturesque village with its small churches and colorful houses. It is a peaceful place to walk and enjoy the atmosphere of yesteryear, despite the continuous flow of buses and trucks on the central street. Founded in 1611 under the name Vila Madalena, it is here that in 1827 the first President of the Republic of Brazil (the current name of the city) was born. Today the place is part of the national cultural and artistic heritage with the fully restored Maison Deodoro house and where a museum has been set up.
