A small colony was established in this area before it became Prewitt. Named Baca, after a local ranching family, it dates back to at least 1890. In 1916, two brothers named Bob and Harold Prewitt moved into the area and established a trading post in a large tent along Old Trails State Road (later Route 66). When a post office was established in 1928, it took the name Prewitt. By 1946, the place had changed little and was little more than a town of a few homes. This is still the case today, and its crossing of Route 66 is just an obligatory passage.
