Close to Hel, the town of Jurata was founded in 1928 as a resort to provide an alternative to Sopot. It quickly became a favorite haunt of Polish high society, with numerous summer villas. The town takes its name from the goddess of the sea, Jūratė. According to legend, she fell in love with a fisherman, with whom she experienced a love forbidden by the god of Lightning. Mad with rage, he destroyed her palace and killed her lover to punish her for disobeying. Since then, Jūratė has mourned his death, forming ambers, considered precious treasures, on the shores.
