Samarinda, 840,000 inhabitants, is the capital of Kalimantan Timur. It is located on the banks of the Mahakam River, about fifty kilometers from the coast. Compared to Balikpapan the prosperous, Samarinda the popular has little to offer. An almost non-existent nightlife, except in the girls' bars and karaoke karaoke, very few hotels and quality restaurants. The two small specialties of the capital are the amplang, a cracker with fish taste and Saraminda sarong, a square of fabric that men wear around their size as clothing. The city finally has an important Islamic center.
