This coastal town is home to a population of around 170,000. It is unique in that its rivers flow through mangrove forests into an ocean of coral reefs. Bontang is the gateway to the splendid Kuta National Park. Among the town's attractions is Bontang Kuala, located on Jalan Piere Tandean, a small fishing village whose picturesque wooden houses on stilts appear to float at high tide. The small island of Beras Basah boasts a superb beach of fine white sand and turquoise waters. It is accessible from the port of Tanjung Laut.
