Balikpapan is Kalimantan's most cosmopolitan city. It is nicknamed the "Oil City" because of its numerous oil wells. It has a population of around 560,000, made up of many Westerners and Chinese working for oil companies. During the Second World War, Balikpapan was the scene of fierce fighting between the Japanese and the Dutch. Some remnants of this period can still be seen in the town. Balikpapan also has a lot to offer, from beautiful resorts and shopping centers to places to have fun or relax after a trek, and even a few beaches..
