Copley, 5 km north of Leigh Creek, is also a charming little mining town (population 80). This small town is the turn-off point for Arkaroola, or for Lyndhurst and Maree. Accommodation is available at the Copley Cabin and Caravan Park, from AU$ 100. It was from here that letter carrier Esmond Gerald (Tom) Kruse (1914-2011) set off before 1960 to carry the mail over the 500 km Birdsville Track. Kruse was made famous in 1954 by John Heyer's film The Back of Beyond, and in 1955 was made a Member of the Order of the British Empire for services to the Outback community.
