Located 50 km from Blantyre, this reserve of about 900 km2, founded in 1928, was transformed into a national park in 1970 to protect its large population of nyalas and sunis (a small antelope that resembles the dik-dik). Border with Mozambique, this isolated park offers a variety of landscapes: from arid savannah to acacia woods and from large baobabs to dense wild vegetation. A small part only to the east of the park is open to the few visitors who can observe some nyalas (about 2,000), baboons, warthogs and other antelopes (kudu, impala, etc.). There are also more than 300 species of birds. Hyenas and leopards can be heard, but the park does not contain much wildlife and animals are not easily seen, especially during the rainy season.
