Less than 60 kilometres from Merida, Sisal was the main port of the state of Yucatán from the 16th to the 19th century. It was the place where henequén and all the goods produced in the region were shipped for sale in the rest of the country and abroad. The creation of the port of Progreso supplanted it in the 20th century. Today it is a pretty little fishing port with beautiful beaches and some historical monuments such as the Fuerte del Castillo, the lighthouse and the old Aduana marítima. In August the Cristo Negro festivities take place, in which fishermen carry out a boat procession behind the image of Christ.
