Three-quarters of it located in northern Tennessee and the remaining quarter in southern Kentucky, Big South Fork National River and Recreation Area was established in 1974. It is a vast wilderness of 50,585 ha on the Cumberland Plateau. It borders the southern part of the Daniel Boone National Forest (Kentucky) and straddles two time zones. Mainly used for hunting, fishing, hiking and other activities on the Cumberland River, this gigantic wooded area is best known for The Twin Arches, the two largest arches in the eastern United States. You can also visit Blue Heron, a former mining community from the 1940s and 1950s. The trip is possible by historic train from Stearns Station (Kentucky). Finally, at the far north of Big South Fork, you can go to Yahoo Falls, an imposing 35-metre high waterfall. The park is home to a significant number of black bears, including 14 females introduced in 1996-97.
