Sevierville is located approximately 20 km north of Great Smoky Mountains Park. Founded in 1794 on the lands of the Cherokees who occupied the entire region at the time, the city takes its name from the hero of the War of Independence John Sevier (1745-1815). Despite an initial development much faster than its neighbour Pigeon Forge (notably thanks to the construction of a station in 1910), the city will only really be in a logic of expansion after the creation of Smoky Mountains Park in 1934. To the south, Sevierville and its attractions now extend along the Parkway (US 441). The latter then gradually merge with those of Pigeon Forge and the road that unites the two cities becomes very frequently congested in summer and on weekends. Dolly Parton, born in Sevierville, was named after the portion of US 411 that crosses Sevierville from east to west (Dolly Parton Parkway). A statue of the famous country singer was even erected in her honour in front of the city court.
