The smell of the pines envelops you as soon as you arrive in the Itasca forest. The park is home to the source of the Mississippi River (Mississippi Headwaters), so the walk is like a pilgrimage. Hiking is one of the most popular activities in the park. A nine-mile section of the North Country Trail, which runs 4,600 miles from New York State to North Dakota, passes through the northern United States. In total, 33 miles of trail are sheltered in Itasca State Park. Established in 1891, this state park is located 23 miles north of Park Rapids and 30 miles south of Bemidji on US 71
