lake itasca
Lake in Itasca State Park, main source of the Mississippi River according to the explorer Henry Schoolcraft, Brower trail to be surveyed
With a surface area of 4.2 km2 and a depth ranging from 6 to 11 metres, Lake Itasca is the result of melting glaciers. It is the heart of the state park and occupies a large part of it. You can drive along it, taking the Brower Trail up to the Mississippi Headwaters to the north of the lake. Lake Itasca is also the main source of the Mississippi, or so the British geographer and explorer Henry Schoolcraft claimed in 1832, after taking part in an expedition to the region.
