Bemidji, a town of less than 15,000 people, is just what you'd expect from a small Minnesota town. It has its own lake, Lake Bemidji, where people come to frolic all summer and much of the fall. It has a small, friendly and lively shopping center, and its residents are the epitome of Minnesota Nice. As the home of Bemidji State University, the city is quite young and much more vibrant than one might imagine. Bemidji achieved a small amount of notoriety after serving as the setting for the first season of the 2014 series Fargo, based on the Cohen brothers' film of the same name. The Minnesota winter landscape here is as hostile as it is sublime.
