Although the exact origins of the character are unknown, Paul Bunyan is usually depicted as a giant lumberjack, a symbol of the hard work on American soil. He is the subject of many stories and has several statues of him across the country. Those of Paul and Babe at Bemidji, measuring 5.5 m and 3 m high respectively, were installed in 1937.
