MISSISSIPPI HEADWATERS
Itasca State Park trail to Lake Itasca, headwaters of the Mississippi River, Wilderness Drive and past Douglas Lodge
Following a shady path, we cross a small river... which is none other than the Mississippi. It's hard to believe that this thin trickle of water, barely a metre wide, will become the mighty river that winds its way down to Louisiana. The only way? Jumping from stone to stone to be able to proudly say: "I crossed the Mississippi on foot! The route continues as Wilderness Drive, a scenic loop that circles Lake Itasca and leads back to the park's east entrance. Along the way, we pass the Douglas Lodge, one of the site's historic buildings.
