EGLISE SAINT-PIERRE-ET-SAINT-PAUL

Churches cathedrals basilicas and chapels

Dating from the twelfth century, the church was rebuilt in the fifteenth century, and its apse was rebuilt in the nineteenth century according to the model of a Romanesque apse. The gem of this church is its twelfth century crypt, classified as a Historical Monument, and whose walls are covered with frescoes dating from the first half of the fourteenth century: a procession of clerics and laity, unique theme known in Nièvre, greets us at the entrance to the crypt and leads us near the altar where the scene of the Crucifixion is represented. On one of the vaults of the crypt, you can see Christ showing his wounds, surrounded by symbols of the four evangelists. Oak leaves, four-leaf clovers and small flowers complement the decor. Note the elegance of the shapes, the preciousness of the gestures and the attitudes which suggest the artistic style from Cour de Saint Louis.
