THE HALL TOWER
Tour des Halles on the Grand-Place with a UNESCO World Heritage-listed belfry
The Halles (or Hallentoren) tower, restored in 1986, is one of the jewels of the Tieltois town center. It dates back to 1275 and was rebuilt in the 16th century. The building dominates the Grand-Place, once an important commercial square, and features a belfry that was listed as a Unesco World Heritage Site in 1999. The walls of the halls bear the coats of arms of Tielt's medieval seigneuries. This handsome building houses a two-hundred-year-old carillon by bell founder Du Méry! You can still hear it ringing.
