WIDOWS' COURT (HET WEEUWHOF)
Cour des Veuves in Poperinge, a space occupied by a hop field, with small houses, a real haven of peace.
Until 1769, this area was occupied by a field of hops! Then Canon Proventier decided to build a dozen white houses on the site, modelled on beguinages. For a long time, these little houses were intended for widows, single women and the elderly. Today, this charming little complex comprises 18 maisonnettes and is owned by the town's Centre d'Action Sociale. A true haven of peace, this "widows' courtyard" is well worth a visit.
