A masked and costumed philanthropic ball that has been organised every year in Ostend since 1896.
The history of the Bal Rat Mort goes back to the Paris of the Belle Époque. A group of sixteen Ostendans invited by Edgar Quinet (French historian, poet and philosopher) came to Paris in 1896 to slum it in a slum, including James Ensor, a famous Ostend painter, engraver and anarchist. The group discovered the Moulin Rouge, Pigalle's interloping cabarets and ended up at dawn at the Rat Mort harbour. In memory of this crazy night, a masked and costumed philanthropic ball is organized by James Ensor in Ostend for the first time in 1898. Then every year!
