The Groeninge monument represents the Virgin of Flanders, a symbol of hard-won freedom in Kortrijk.

The Groeninge monument, by Godfried Devreese, was erected on the Groeningekouter site, and recalls the victorious battle of the Flemish warriors during the Battle of the Golden Spurs. Made of gilded bronze, it depicts the Virgin of Flanders (Maagd van Vlaanderen), symbol of a freedom hard won in battle, one hand raised, the other holding back the lion of Flanders whose chains are broken.
