RABOT
Old fortified lock on the canal La Lieve with an alley planted with large trees.
Just 500 meters northwest of Patershol, this water gate can be seen from the northern end of Begijnhoflaan. With its two pointed towers framing a stepped gable, this ancient fortified lock dates back to 1491. It is the last relic of the city's ancient ramparts, located on La Lieve, the inland canal. Opening the lock would have flooded over 13 km² of land! Today, however, the Begijnhoflaan is an avenue planted with tall trees, marking the boundary of the former beguinage. An admirable construction not to be missed.
