Vielsalm is truly the northern gateway to the Luxembourg Ardennes. A region rich in tourist attractions. The town was the seat of the Counts of Salm as early as the 10th century. They built their first castle here, abandoning it in the 14th century. Notables, clerks, burghers and the parish priest remained in Vielsalm. The roof of the province of Luxembourg, the Baraque de Fraiture is famous for its downhill and cross-country ski stations. Less well known is the beautiful Plateau des Tailles, a protected nature reserve. The Saint-Gengoux fountain, the two towers of the castle of the Counts of Salm in Salmchâteau, the château de Provedroux (listed, Louis XVI style), the chapel and château de Farnières, the chapels of Ennal and Tinseubois, the typical villages of La Comté, Neuville, Burtonville and Ville-du-Bois, the Fosse Roulette gorge, the Rochers de Hourt, the bec du Corbeau, the Commanster marshes, are all additional and unusual attractions. The towns and villages surrounding Vielsalm form a jewel box of greenery: from Grand-Halleux, land of tree nurseries for two centuries, to Commanster, an important heritage site, via the sumptuous Grand-Bois state forest. Local products include liqueurs, eaux-de-vie, péket, crèmes d'alcool, vinegars, jams, dragées, pâtés, tarts and ice creams. Other products include honey, beer bearing the La Vieille Salme label, spices for mulled wine, Ardenne cured meats, goat's cheese and mare's milk.
