Located in the San Juan River Valley, this town was founded in 1880 by Mormon pioneers. It is bordered by the river to the south and by impressive sandstone cliffs to the north, all of which sets the scene for the superb Route 163. The latter is part of the Trail of the Ancients Scenic Byway which, coming from Cortez, Colorado, passes through Monument Valley before reaching Canyon de Chelly, Arizona.
