Located at equal distance from the two capitals of the country (120 km), or about an hour's drive, Tiassalé is irrigated by the Bandama River and the N'Zi River, which cross under the beautiful arched bridge at the entrance to the city built in 1934. The city is crossed by major national roads. One of the first historical cities in Côte d'Ivoire, Tiassalé was a strategic outpost towards the interior of the country during colonization, as well as an important trading post for explorers who came here after having travelled up the Bandama river via Grand-Lahou. Since the 18th century, the Baoulé and Abbey ethnic groups, both originally from Ghana, have lived together peacefully in the area, as well as four other ethnic groups in the department: Abidji-Agnis, Agnis, Elomoins and Souamlins. The city is known for its beautiful landscapes of rapids and green banks, which lend themselves beautifully to bucolic excursions, but also as a privileged viewing point for hippos.
