Located some 20 km from Nadi, Momi Bay bears witness to military activity in Fiji during the Second World War. In 1941, to protect the island from the Japanese, New Zealand troops built two cannons. The location was chosen for its panoramic views. Momi Bay was the subject of controversy for almost 10 years in the 2000s, with several entrepreneurs attempting to recreate a second Port Denarau. The Fiji Marriott Resort Momi Bay (considered one of the largest real estate projects in Fiji) finally took thirteen years to build before being inaugurated in 2016.
