PAPUNYA GROUND PAINTING

Natural site to discover

In the center desert, large paintings are carried out on the ground for ritual ceremonies. For colors and texture, blood, feathers, twigs and seeds are used. In the early 1970 s, Papunya's local artists began experimenting with acrylic painting on canvas where colored touches reproduced the motifs of their paintings on the ground. Today, the artists of the Western Desert movement are recognized among the best in Australia. Visit the Australian Museum website (www.australianmuseum.net.au/Collection-Stories-Western-Desert-Art) which holds nearly 100 paintings of this type.
