Omeo is a small hamlet of around 400 inhabitants (at the last census in 2021) on the Great Alpine Road, some 60 km east of Mount Hotham and approximately 20 km north of Bairnsdale. It marks the last stop on this beautiful tourist route. And it marks the northern end of the Gippsland Region. For the sporty and adventurous, the Australian Alps Walking Track crosses the region, starting in Baw Baw National Park. Between Bright and Omeo, for example, you can expect to cover around 110 kilometers. From Omea to Bairnsdale, count around 120 kilometers.
