With around 17,000 inhabitants, Bairnsdale is the largest town in the East Gippsland region. It lies at the southern end of the Great Ocean Road and close to Gippsland Lake. It is crossed by the Mitchell River, which gives its name to the wild and beautiful Mitchel River National Park, 50 km to the northwest. To the south of the town, the Macleod Morass Wildlife Reserve is a 520-hectare protected area that is home to numerous birds and aquatic animals.
